Bogie Lake Greenhouses is a family-owned and operated business that began in December of 1987. Owners Mark and Patty have a passion for growing plant material both familiar and unique within the industry.
Over the years, we have been fortunate enough to work in an industry we love and, at the same time, be able to raise a family we cherish. As our children grow up, it makes us realize how fortunate we are to have “the best of both worlds.”
The business could never be what it is today without the greatest employees in Oakland County. With only a handful of remarkable staff working year round, each spring almost every employee previously hired has returned to help produce a bountiful crop of new plants. Each staff member possesses unique talents in plant propagation, making the greenhouse a collection of knowledge for customers to reference.
Bogie Lake Greenhouses began as Thompson Greenhouses, Inc., a business owned and operated by Mr. Thompson that had been in his family since the early 1930s. For over fifty years, the Thompsons operated the greenhouse strictly as a foliage plant production facility. As the White Lake Township area prospered and the demand for foliage plants decreased, the greenhouse eventually added a floral department to its thriving operation. Time passed and the Thompsons decided it was best to retire from the business they knew and loved; most of the greenhouses constructed by the Thompsons are still used today.
Since I grew up in the greenhouse industry and Mark had worked for my family for many years, we both knew and loved the business. Long before we acquired Thompson’s, we had dreams of someday owning a retail greenhouse operation. Never in our wildest dreams did we think it would happen to us at such an early age! The decision only took three short months, from the time we first heard that Mr. Thompson was retiring to the time we purchased the greenhouse.
We have grown emotionally and physically during the past twenty-nine years since we first signed our names on the dotted line. Our magnificent employees and customers have watched our children grow into two young adults and we have seen their families change. Twelve-thousand square feet was added to our growing area in 1992 and in 1997 we doubled our retail space which includes the perennial greenhouse.
After all these years, we both still enjoy the challenge of a new year and a new season. On that cold, December day in 1987, it never occurred to us that our passion for growing and nurturing some of the most beautiful plants nature has to offer would bond us to some of the most beautiful people within our community.
